It is not a common affair to pick up a $5 dollar bill on the ground while going on with your business. Most of the people actually consider finding dollar bills on the ground as a sign of good luck despite the value of the bill. The same is happening in Huston/Galveston area but instead of finding the US dollar, citizens of the area are finding Bitcoin Cash paper wallets with 0.025 BCH (~$10 USD) loaded in them.
Announcement of the FindBitcoinCash treasure hunt on Reddit (@_pokkst)
One of the lucky finders, however, committed a grave mistake by posting a picture of the found wallet on Twitter raising a storm of “whys?” to the lucky finder. Despite the image being blurry, little lighting effects on the image can reveal the QR code of the wallet – effectively jeopardizing the security of the BCH coins.
The Four Bitcoin Cash Paper Addresses
A Redditor on the Bitcoin Cash Reddit page announced the magical treasure hunt of four Bitcoin Cash paper wallets in the Huston/Galveston area. The paper wallets contain a reward of 0.025 BCH, roughly $10 USD, and the mnemonic word phrase and QR code to allow access to the wallets.
Three of the four paper wallets have already been found with the fourth one situated anywhere near San Jacinto College South in Houston. The competition uses clues and near landmarks to assist BCH enthusiasts find the treasure.
“A popular place to hang out in Galveston. This private key resides in some bushes along a building near a large chess set. Though a lot of the times the chess pieces aren’t there.
General location hint: Galveston”
– One of the descriptions of the set
With the word on the treasure hunt going round the BCH subreddit, more people have joined the search and some took to themselves to add some few coins to the wallet. The paper wallet can be having a reward above the $30 USD mark.
The Bitcoin Cash paper wallet search, however, has faced some challenges along the way as one of the hiders (@pokkst) wrote a wrong location.
The “Find Bitcoin Cash” page on Twitter released an alert for the location of the hidden wallet earlier on Monday this week. The hidden wallet alert confirmed that one of the paper wallets was located in some bushes outside @fuddruckers on The Strand in #Galveston, #Texas. However, one of the followers of the treasure hunt complained that there is no Fuddruckers any more in the said location and termed the exercise
@pokkst responded to the claims of fraud saying,
“I don’t come to Galveston that often. It’s now some tavern. I still call it Fuddruckers. […] When I was getting the address of the place it still called it Fuddruckers. I didn’t realize the “CLOSED” meant permanently closed lol I just thought it was closed for the night.”
A Crucial Mistake By All Means
When CCN, a cryptocurrency news website, reported the mistake made by one of the lucky finders – exposing their private key – the tone of the article was far more negative than uplifting. Constantly referring to the lucky BCH finder (@Mondiablue) as just a “Bernie supporter” and tarnishing his image for exposing his QR code on Twitter was blatantly harsh. The article further included a section titled,
“NEVER PUT A BERNIE SANDERS VOTER IN CHARGE OF THE MONEY POT.”
While freedom of speech is widely encouraged in the cryptocurrency field, actions such as the trolling by the CCN article reduces the overall adoption rate.
Mondiablue exposing his private wallet key on Twitter
@Mondiablue is one of the three lucky winners of the hidden BCH paper wallets across Huston. The lucky BCH wallet finder, however, committed a grave mistake in posting the found wallet on Twitter with the caption, “I FOUND IT!!!” The picture is blurry and the lighting is not good but the QR code is exposed which secures the funds in the wallet.
One positive in the tale of Hidden Bitcoin Cash wallets is the quick setting up BCH wallets for these newbies to deposit their coins. Furthermore, to transfer the $10 to his account, @Mondiablue, spent less than a tenth of a cent (1.01 satoshis) on fees. The FindBitcoinCash page will be releasing more treasure hunts across more states in the U.S in the coming days. Be on the lookout!
