Bitcoin (BTC) is the first decentralised cryptocurrency, originally created by the elusive Satoshi Nakamoto. Even though there are thousands of different digital assets in the crypto market today, Bitcoin is still the number one with the largest market capitalisation by a long mile.

Bitcoin, with a value of $7,833 at this time, is now more than a decade old and serves a myriad of purposes for many different people. It’s a great store of value for some and is aimed to beat gold in this regard.

It is also a fantastic way to make payments all over the world within minutes without having to worry about governmental restrictions and regulations. However, even though Bitcoin is these things at the same time, it’s also a bit more.

Bitcoin Core on a Nintendo Switch

Expanding Bitcoin’s accessibility, a crypto enthusiast recently ran the Bitcoin Core client on his Nintendo Switch game successfully. The tech buff took to Twitter to share images of his Nintendo Switch hardware running the current v0.18.0 of the software which he was able to do after first running Linux Ubuntu on the console.

The user, Vivek (@Cypherm0nk), posted the image with the caption, “Running Bitcoin” and the image also clearly shows data from the Bitcoin blockchain as the last block time and existing number of blocks can be plainly seen.

A while after Nintendo officially launched the Switch it was revealed by a group of hackers that the Linux operating system could be installed on the game. Fail0verflow, the hacker collective responsible initially posted an image on Twitter of a Nintendo Switch booting Linux. A little later they posted a video showing the console fully running a Linux with a function web browser.

Some hackers are mostly malicious with their intentions and usually force their way into software for many mischievous reasons. However, it would be unfair to not recognise some others who are just very enthusiastic about technology and don’t seek to do anything destructive. Fail0verflow was probably just showing a proof of concept with their endeavour especially because an actual PC is the most useful way to run the software.

Linux is the preferred software for some crypto users who prefer cold storage in keeping their assets. Most people who have their crypto on an air-gapped computer without direct connection to the internet almost always use Linux. This probably inspired the idea for the hacker to run Bitcoin Core on the Switch because it could already allow the operating system.

Hal Finney Homage

It could make sense to conclude that the caption “Running Bitcoin” that accompanied Vivek’s image was deliberately written as a way to tip a hat to Hal Finney, who more than ten years ago in January 2009, tweeted the exact same thing.

Since Finney is known as the first person to ever receive a Bitcoin transaction, it is still widely assumed that he just might be the real Satoshi Nakamoto.

Bitcoin Growth and Adoption

The fact that the Bitcoin Core was successfully launched on a Nintendo Switch just might be a great move in the adoption direction for the number one asset.

There has always been considerable worry about Bitcoin’s scalability and while running the software doesn’t exactly do anything for scaling, it says a lot for adoption and if adoption surges, we just might see a workable solution to Bitcoin’s scalability problems.
